Why I Wanted to Be a Big Sis Volunteer:
i have chosen to volunteer because I’ve always believed that the moments when we feel most alone are often the moments when we need connection the most. Growing up, I remember times in my own life—especially as a younger teenager—when everything felt overwhelming: friendships shifting, family pressures, questions about who I was and where I fit in the world. There were nights when I wished I had someone safe, non-judgmental, and kind to talk to—someone who wouldn’t lecture me, dismiss me, or make me feel small for not having it all figured out. I didn’t always have that person readily available, and I know how heavy that silence can feel.
That’s why the Big Sis Help Line means so much to me. The idea that a young person—whether a boy or a girl—can reach out anonymously through a simple text and find someone on the other end who genuinely cares, listens without agenda, and offers support… it feels like the kind of lifeline I wish had existed for me in my hardest moments. I want to be that person for someone else.
I’m volunteering because I know how powerful it is to feel seen and heard, especially when you’re young and the world can feel impossibly big and confusing. Kids today face pressures I could never have imagined at their age—social media comparison, academic stress, identity questions, family challenges, mental health struggles—and sometimes they just need a safe space to say, “I’m not okay” or “I don’t know what to do” without fear of judgment.
I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I do have empathy, patience, and a deep belief that every young person deserves to feel valued and supported. I want to help them navigate tough moments, celebrate their wins (no matter how small), and remind them that they’re not alone—even when it feels like they are.
